The Don
Don Carleoni (aka Carson), Chicago's best loved mobster (surely, pastoral theologian?), speaking on "Prayer changes things...or does it?" at yesterday's EMA. He is speaking on Moses' prayers in Exodus 32-34. Great stuff. Yesterday....towards the end:
"I have only one point. This is the main thing I want to say. God is never less than all he is."
You may have to go elsewhere to unpack all of this - basically he was saying that God is both utterly unqualifiably sovereign and personal (emotional, speaking, sustaining relationships etc). Two implications for prayer:
- there is admitted mysteriousness in prayer. He is above our capacity to conceive and nowhere is this seen more clearly than in the cross.
- we must allow each biblically revealed attribute of God to function with respect to our prayer lives only as it functions in Scripture and no other way.
In other words, GOD IS NEVER LESS THAN ALL HE IS!
