Calvin finally makes The Times

Some time ago, I wrote to The Times lamenting that Calvin's 500th anniversary was being overlooked. A good case can be made for the fact that Calvin's Reformation has had a more significant impact on education, the Arts, philosophy, science etc than any other single movement in the history of Europe. Today, finally they have responded with an article tucked away in the Faith section. It's not bad, though it does try to take something of an "appeasement" line. Go read.

The 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin falls on July 10. How might we mark such a milestone? With a 24-hour ban on all kinds of fun, maybe? With a commemorative burning of heretics, at least in effigy? Or perhaps with separate events for the elect and for the reprobate?

That first paragraph made me think it was going to be a Ruth Gledhill hardcore-liberal article trashing Calvin as someone who was all-out evil (which is pretty much what she always does when mentioning him). Thankfully the article was very good, trashing the common misconceptions and deliberate lies.

Ruth Gledhill responds:

For the record, I don't believe Calvin was evil, never mind 'all-out evil', and am certain I have never written that he was. In fact, I am a Protestant myself and try to practise, without much success it has to be admitted, much of what Calvin preached. You are right, it was a good article, and great that it appeared in The Times.
